DSM Elastomers has started up the first run of Keltan EPDM production using the ACE advanced catalyst technology which it first unveiled last year.
The process, employed at its Geleen site in the Netherlands, will lead to a new family of EPDM products containing significant quantities of 2-vinyl-5-norbornene (VNB) as the third monomer.
The company sees a number of benefits for the ACE system which is described by Christian Widdershoven, vp marketing and sales, as “the largest innovation since the introduction of EPDM.”
Key benefits claimed include a reduction of between 30 and 70% in the use of peroxide cross linking agent which in turn provides improvements to the synthetic rubber with less blooming and fewer volatile emissions. High temperature performance and scorch behaviour are also enhanced and unique processing features, in which high zero shear viscosities are combined with high shear thinning, allow smooth extrusion and ejection with no loss of dimensional stability.
Sampling of customers with product using the new technology will begin next year.
