The Shanghai Futures Exchange announced after the market closed on Wednesday that trading in most copper futures contracts on the exchange's board would be suspended on Thursday due to three straight days of limit falls.

A total of 10 major contracts ranging from October 2008 to July 2009 had closed down their daily limit -- 4 percent for the first day, 5 percent for the second day and 6 percent for the third day -- from Monday to Wednesday.

"In line with exchange regulations, these contracts will be suspended from trading on the next trading day," the exchange said in a statement. Initially, its statement appeared to refer to only two copper contracts.

The exchange also announced a trading halt for rubber March and May 2009 contracts on Thursday for the same reason.

It also outlined changes in margin requirements and daily limit levels for some rubber and zinc contracts for limit falls up to two days.
